Driver helped students safely escape from Paramus bus fire

Fire consumed a school bus Monday but none of the 22 students aboard were hurt, Chief of Police Kenneth R. Ehrenberg said in a statement.

The fire broke out as the bus was near Eastbrook Middle School on Spring Valley Road, Ehrenberg said. The driver, Jose Rodriguez of Paterson, helped all the students evacuate, Ehrenberg also said. No one was hurt.

Rodriguez, who works for the Jordan Bus Company, had just picked up the students at Paramus High School when he noticed smoke and pulled over. The fire, which did not appear suspicious, started in the engine compartment.

Paramus firefighters extinguished the blaze, which destroyed the bus. Spring Valley Road was shut down
